Lenz writes that “Mother Tongue” "began life as a musing about the language I learned from my mother, and what it means for connection and identity to grow up away from your mother’s culture." However, as the piece took shape, its Anatolian Alevi instrumentation mingling with metal-inflected basslines, lamenting cello, and complex vocal syncopation, it grew into a deeply considered and affecting study of imperialist white-supremacist capitalist patriarchal gender-based violence.
